There are tools — and then there are super-tools! I’m currently sharing this tool with my University of California, Los Angeles Law School students — whatever you worry most about when it comes time to give your presentation — write it in the “fear, worry, doubt, concern, stress” column. Example: I’m worried construction noise from next door pool rebuild will affect my virtual class. Then…welcome the fear and give it life. Imagine the worst happening and ask yourself — what’s next? What will I do then? Example: I’ll ask my neighbors to pause on jackhammering between 9-11am and 2-4pm daily; I’ll have a back-up setup in my kitchen, which is the furthest room in the house from noise. And I’ll book a sound-proof studio space in case I need to use it.
What’s your fear, worry, doubt, concern? Write it down — get it out of your mind and onto paper. Then — plan, plan, plan and 1. If it shows up, you’re prepared and 2. It’s less likely to throw you off or even happen because you are ready for it. This works for presentations — and for so many other areas of your professional and personal life.
